Amber cove is the new port in the Dominican Republic. Carnival Corp was a partner in building this port that is capable of accommodating super-sized cruise ships. The 25 acre complex cost approximately 85 million to build. The Carnival Victory was the first ship to use the port on Tuesday. It will soon be followed by other Carnival family brands — Carnival, Costa, Cunard, Holland America, German line AIDA and British-based P&O Cruises.
The port also offers about 40 shore excursions through Carnival that include, beaches, museums, catamaran sails, 4×4 drives, and outback adventures.
“Amber Cove, the port, is not the destination,” David Candib, the Carnival Corp. manager for the project, told USA TODAY in September during a tour of the site. “The region of Puerto Plata really is what the cruise port is about.”
