Since the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory was close by, we decided to just walk there and leave the car parked around the corner. The butterfly conservatory is very nice, they have a great store with some gorgeous pieces of art work. Breakaway actually has one of those exhibits aboard the ship, they are just gorgeous. But anyway I will let the pictures do the talking. Pictures of the art pieces are not allowed, I got a few before I was told not to take pictures of them. I will respect their art privacy and not post them. But I will say that one butterfly in a box can run you $15-$40, so you do the math for a piece like NCL Breakaway, there must of been a few thousand butterflies there.
We had a great time over there. It is actually that one of my aunts runs a butterfly conservatory in Colombia, so I got a bunch of pictures for her.
This is the part of the store that you’re allowed to take pictures off. I have dealt with similar situations in Cozumel were it is prohibited to take pictures of some artwork.
Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory store.
First they have a indoor exhibit.
Types of butterflies by locations around the world. Quite a few in South America, Europe and Africa don’t seem to have that many.
And then you walk into the green house, it was quite warm and humid inside there.
It is kind of sad that their life cycle is so short… I think 3 days? It’s been a while since I research this.
A really nice bench.
Some of them are very friendly. All you have to do is slide your finger slowly next to them and they just move to your finger. My mom had a hard time doing this, but eventually I got one for her.
This one was huge! I was trying to show the scale based on my opened hand.
No! I did not place her there, she landed there whiningly! lol, just being silly.
And then they had these
The flamingos were so funny, one of them had a really nasty attitude. Well either that or he wanted food from me, who knows, I could not tell.
My aunt was obsessed with this kind of butterfly, I think her favorite color is green.
And lots of quails running around. Tasty
Yum yum =)
This one is the one with the attitude lol, he would not shut up. They are soooo cute, just love them. He came out of no-where!
Mom’s hat, they warn you to check all your clothes before leaving the conservatory.
They really liked his back, lol
These guys had really long legs.

Honestly I am not sure the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory is worth it, I know that if you buy one of the bus tours it includes the entrance to the butterfly place. I guess it really all depends if you like these type of activities. If you come with a large group that admission fee can add pretty quick. It is one of those things that you say been there done that, but will most likely not go back. It is also small greenhouse and can be toured quite quickly, we did the entire place in 30 minutes, I think…
After we enjoyed the place for enough time I asked mom if she wanted to wait there and I would go get the car and pick them up. There was going to be a lot of walking that day, and later on she had to drive back home. So if I could take some of the strain out of her day I would. Mom and Aunty stayed in the butterfly store while I went around the block to get the car. Up next Ernest Hemingway House.
